Arrival in Western Persia

Teams will typically fly in to Istanbul in Turkey, a remarkable city straddling Europe and Asia where east meets west and the adventure begins! After a day or so exploring the sites of this iconic city and getting used to the climate, culture, language and food, teams will board an overnight train, leaving Europe behind and heading east, towards Cappadocia or the Kackar Mountains, where a range of exciting trekking possibilities can be found. There will be opportunities for short warm-up treks in these areas – day treks exploring the magical rock formations, cave dwellings and landscapes around Goreme in Cappadocia, or the alpine meadows in the foothills of the Kackars, before commencing the main trekking phase.

Main trekking phase in Western Persia

Trekking in Turkey during the summer months is amongst the best in the world. The Ala Daglar (Taurus) Range offers teams challenging treks of 6-10 days, with the many peaks and passes over 3000m. Mt Emler (3723m) is the goal, but enroute teams will trek through spectacular alpine scenery, with high passes and plateaus, jagged peaks, lush meadows and valleys, turquoise lakes and panoramic views. On the way teams will meet families tending to their flocks, making for a great cultural experience amidst beautiful scenery. For a different challenge, teams can explore the dramatic craggy landscape of the Kackar range in northern Turkey. Rising from the Black Sea the Kackars are dominated by giant glaciers, peaks and lakes, and here the goal over a 7 day trek is Kackar Peak (3972m) – the highest point in the range.

Rest and relaxation in Western Persia

Time for some well deserved rest and relaxation and a complete change from the mountains of Turkey. Continuing the journey south east through Persia, teams will soon reach Syria. The cultural sites here are unrivalled: from the magnificent Roman city of Palmyra – fantastically preserved in the middle of the desert – to the mighty crusade castle of Krak des Chevaliers, to the exciting souks and medieval alleyways of Aleppo and Damascus, giving plenty of opportunities to haggle for some last minute bargains! As part of a 3 or 4 week expedition it is also possible to continue your journey south in to Jordan, where the world-famous rose city of Petra is a must-see highlight and the Dead Sea beckons…
