Far from help medical award
No ordinary First Aid CourseThis 2-day 'Far From Help' medical course is specifically designed to deal with medical problems in a foreign expedition setting when help may be hours or days away.
This course is run by World Challenge's medical consultant Dr Jon Dallimore, in his capacity as Medical Director of Wilderness Medical Training, an independent company that has been training World Challenge Expeditions leaders since 1995 (wildernessmedicaltraining.co.uk). It is a 3-day course specifically designed to deal with medical problems in a foreign expedition setting when help may be hours or days away.
The course is open to all Leaders and School Leaders regardless of past first aid training or expedition experience. We would like to stress that this course is not like a standard first aid course, which are more basic and have a lower price. You will be taught by doctors, nurses and Expedition Leaders with vast experience.
Course Syllabus
Far From Help is Wilderness Medical Training foundation programme that includes advice on the use of prescription medications and drugs. The course focuses on developing good diagnostic skills and treatment of common injury conditions and illnesses that might arise in an expedition setting. Medical problems related to the environment (high, hot and cold) are also covered.
The emphasis of the course is very much on developing a sense of which medical problems can be managed in the field, which ones require further but not urgent treatment, and which cases need urgent evacuation. This is an intensive and hands on programme. Remember, your expedition will take you "Far from Help" where there is no ambulance on standby or 999 to ring! This course will fulfil the first aid requirement of NGB awards such as the MLTB, although it is not HSE approved. This course is all you need to do to fulfil WCE's first aid training requirements.
Wilderness Medical Training are renowned for their innovative teaching methods, inspiring instructors, hands on practical exercises (indoors and out), support materials and course manuals.
