Acclimatisation on the Uganda and Western Kenya expedition
There are many options for acclimatisation in both Kenya and Uganda. Teams may be able to explore the Kakamega Forest, Kenya's only remaining patch of the great tropical rainforest that once spanned West and Central Africa. It is world famous for its diversity of birds and animals, including the very rare De Brazza's monkey, which is found nowhere else in Kenya.
As part of their acclimatisation phase teams can visit some rural communities in South West Uganda. Here they will be able to complete a series of day walks around crater lakes and through savannah and acacia woodland, whilst observing unique and important wetland habitats in the area.
Main trekking phase
Mount Elgon, lying 140km north-east of Lake Victoria, is bisected by the Kenya-Uganda border and is both countries’ second highest mountain. It is an ancient eroded volcano with a huge caldera and, on its summit, a spectacular flat-topped basalt column. Teams climb to the Wagagai Peak (4321m), climbing up and down the Ugandan side of the mountain only. This trek offers an excellent challenge for those with limited mountaineering experience.
Project work in Uganda and Kenya
Projects in Kenya or Uganda are community based and involve taking part in construction and renovation projects at a number of extremely poor primary and secondary schools in the region. Teams may, for example, help to build a classroom or help to paint or rebuild part of an existing school. Challengers may also have opportunities to teach English and play sports with the local children.
Rest and relaxation
There are many opportunities to relax in both Kenya and Uganda throughout the expedition. The teams may decide to visit one of the National Parks found in both countries and they may also like to go white water rafting (although this would incur an additional cost). There are some beautiful waterfalls located at the town of Sipi in Uganda which teams could also spend a couple of days exploring.
