Acclimatisation
Buwata Community Trail: The Buwata Community Trail is a 2-3 day trek that takes teams through local villages and communities on the slopes of the Rwenzoris. Teams will pass by local villages and schools and will will witness first hand daily life in western Uganda. As well as being excellent physical preparation for the main trek, this trail will really acclimatise you to the Ugandan environment and help you understand more Ugandan culture.
Ruccochi Falls: Ruccochi Falls is a tough day trek that takes you through local villages and undulating terrain. At the end you will be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular views back over the valley and, of course, the impressive Ruccochi waterfalls.
Main trekking phase in Uganda
Rwenzoris: A 5 to 7 day trek in Africa's highest mountain range, with over 20 peaks topping 4000m, the Rwenzoris offer some fabulous and challenging trekking landscapes. The trekking routes in the mountain range were opened up only recently and so you will experience a truly remote trekking experience, free from the tourists present on other mountains in East Africa. At times, you will really feel like the first ones to have set foot on the slopes. Trekking the Rwenzoris is a tough, yet highly rewarding option.
Project
At Kabukwiri Primary School, one team helped to build a new classroom up to roof level in one year and then left the funds for the completion of the roof. This meant that the children of the school could look forward to being taught in a modern and safe environement, as opposed to the mud hut structures that they were using previously. Teams in 2011 are hoping to create a further new classroom and a new kitchen structure.
Rest and relaxation on the Uganda expedition
Rest and relaxation in Uganda is spread throughout the expedition. Teams can visit Queen Elizabeth National where there are opportunities for game drives, boat safaris and chimp trekking. They can also go white water rafting at the source of the River Nile or, alternatively, the expedition could finish off at Ngamba Island, where the team could view some of the orphaned chimpanzees during their feeding time (both these would incur an additional cost).
