Arrival in Romania
All teams will fly into Bucharest. From Bucharest teams trekking in the Bucegi Mountains travel to Zarnesti by minibus whilst those teams completing their trek in the Suhard Mountains will catch the overnight train to Vatra Dornei in the north of Romania.
Main trekking phase in Romania
In both areas teams will be accompanied by a local guide and will carry all of their own kit, will cook for themselves and will spend each night wild camping, making this a more challenging short haul destination.
Bucegi Mountains - A delightful area of high, bare peaks contained in a small area, the Bucegi Mountains are Romania’s best kept secret. The Bucegi Mountains are easily accessible by foot from the small town of Zarnesti where you will begin and end your trek.
Suhard Mountains – This area offers more remote trekking, taking teams over extremely picturesque and rolling green landscapes. More treks have recently been established in this area and there is now the opportunity for teams to canoe across Lake Colibita as part of their itinerary. In addition to this, is the opportunity for pioneering teams to experience the history of Romania first hand whilst trekking between the painted monasteries of Southern Bucovina.
Project phase in Romania (14 day expeditions only)
Projects tend to be based in the local communities, working with local school children or on environmental projects.
Rest and relaxation
Teams will visit local towns or different points of interest depending on the areas they are trekking. Bucegi teams can experience the myths and legends of Dracula at Bran Castle, Peles Castle and Brasov; whilst Suhard teams have the option of white water rafting.
