Pay and benefits structure for Expedition Leaders

There are many benefits of leading a World Challenge expedition including our training credit scheme, generous discounts on clothing and equipment and bonuses. The simple steps below show you how much you could earn and benefit from.

Expedition Leaders Pay and Benefits

Standard 4 week itinerary
(previously known as long haul) The base rate figure for leading a standard 4 week expedition is detailed in table 1 below. Once the base rate fee is calculated then the appropriate bonuses need to be added from table 2 and 3.

The figures below are for a standard 4 week itinerary. Fees for 2 or 3 week expeditions will be calculated on a weekly pro-rata basis.

Attend the Meet The Leader (MTL) evening

A further £100 is payable after completing the MTL (contractual requirement).

The fees for these expeditions are detailed in table 4 below.
The only bonus payable on top of the figures in the table below are for multiple expeditions as in table 3.

Other benefits

Whatever the duration of the expedition that you are leading, every Expedition Leader is entitled to many other benefits.

Expenses
Please email the Leader Management Team for a full breakdown of expenses which are claimed or log-in to the expedition members’ site to view them.

The main ones which can be claimed are below:
  • Visas
  • Travel and subs for Meet the Leader (MTL)
  • Travel and subs for Expedition Preparation Conference (EPC)
  • Travel and subs for build-up day and return home
  • Rest and relaxation (R&R) on expedition with the team
Training and development opportunities
World Challenge is committed to developing staff and Challengers alike. The following training and development opportunities have therefore been developed specifically for World Challenge Expedition Leaders.

Training credit scheme
Leaders accrue a £75 and £30 training credit for each standard (long haul) and other (short haul) expedition led since the scheme started on 1 September 2007. The credits can be accrued and redeemed at any time against the
following the courses:
  • Any professional development course delivered by World Challenge
  • Training or assessment courses for either the International Mountain Leader or Winter Mountain
Professional development modules
Leaders have the opportunity to attend a range of excellent continual professional development modules delivered by World Challenge at our centre in Buxton or Head Office in High Wycombe. Details of these will be placed on the expedition members’ website and emailed to you from time to time.

Other
All Expedition Leaders are given a Cotswold Outdoor discount card which entitles you to 25% discount on clothing and 20% on kit. Expedition Leaders leading a standard expedition

  • A full day of preparation at one of our Expedition Preparation Conferences which include destination specific workshops and safety and medical briefings
