Group Operations Director

Julian Penney, Group Operations Director

Jules Penney Julian’s deep rooted love of the outdoors has guided his professional and personal life for many years. Known for being very level headed and calm in a crisis, Julian ensures he is always on hand whenever there is an operational decision to make.

As Operations Director, Julian combines his own considerable expertise with that of specialists in his team and calls upon the vast experience and contacts developed within the World Challenge community since 1987.

His focus is to ensure teams have a safe and developmental expedition experience, whether that is on a training expedition, helping to build a school in Tanzania or climbing 4,000m peaks in the Indian Himalaya. After ensuring all potential risks are identified and managed, a large proportion of his role is spent ensuring the Operations Centre is ready to handle any incident imaginable; including providing his Operations Centre team as well as the expedition leaders with the best tools to make this possible.

Long before Julian joined World Challenge in 2003, his passion for adventure activities and travelling was evident as he went to Loughborough University to study Geography, joined the British Army as a commissioned officer (he led numerous expeditions and travelled extensively during his six years’ service) and worked as a freelance outdoor management consultant and expedition leader, leading groups all over the world.

Julian is currently Vice Chair of the Expedition Providers Association, Chair of its Technical Committee, a Trustee of the Institute for Outdoor Learning and also sits on the British Standard committee for overseas ventures. When he is not working he enjoys nothing more than sea kayaking with various family members (including his two young children) whenever the opportunity arises.
