The World Challenge expedition format
Expedition format
Built into a World Challenge expedition is a range of community project work, trekking and cultural adventure a unique mixture that ensures the expedition is one of the most exhilarating and rewarding team building experiences available. The World Challenge team will be responsible for sourcing transport, accommodation and provisions and for managing the budget throughout the duration of the expedition. In addition to this, each Challenger (the students participating) will spend time taking on roles such as team leader (making all the decisions) and accountant with the support of our Expedition Leader and the School Leader(s). Throughout the expedition the decisions made will be reviewed by the team to ensure that they gain the maximum development from the experience.

A typical 4-week World Challenge expedition incorporates four phases:
|
Acclimatisation phase
After arriving at your destination, a few days of admin and planning takes place followed by a short trekking phase to acclimatise physically and to ensure the team is working well together and prepared for the tougher challenges to come. As with all elements of this expedition, how strenuous and the location of these acclimatisation treks will be decided by the team.

Trekking phase Every World Challenge expedition has a challenging trekking phase and, with 55 expedition destinations to choose from, the options for your team are varied in both the level of physicality and environment. You could choose from trekking in the lush jungles of Costa Rica or Borneo, climbing Mount Kenya, trekking through canyons in Namibia, or even exploring the remote region of Ladakh deep in the Indian Himalaya. |
Whether you’re inspired by mountain peaks, dense jungle, rich valleys, savannah plains or even volcanoes, the trekking phase of your World Challenge expedition will be a real test of the team but what a sense of achievement when you reach your goal!

Project/community phase Typically, every World Challenge expedition has a 3-10 day community or environmental project built into the itinerary. We encourage the team to think about the project phase and contribute ideas to what they would like to achieve. Our Planning Managers liaise with local contacts and aim to find placements which meet the needs of the community and the goals of the team. |
Sustainable project work
We develop sustainable projects that will continue to benefit the communities we work with long after the students have left. It is vital that the students take part in selecting their project during the itinerary planning process and that, once with the project hosts, they focus on the goals they want to achieve.
World Challenge will be on hand to give the team an insight into the country they are visiting, help organise project work, provide feedback from previous teams and help them make the most of their adventure. The type of project depends to some degree on the destination chosen.
Teams might help build basic amenities in a remote Andean village in Ecuador, renovate classrooms in a Himalayan village, or work at a turtle sanctuary in Costa Rica.
Whatever you do will benefit the community you are in and the team will have the amazing opportunity of seeing and participating in a way of life far removed from their own; a truly eye-opening experience!
