Peru sits on the Pacific coast of South America and is more than five times the size of the UK. It has three main environments; the vast Amazonian lowlands, the Andes mountains and a narrow strip of coastal plain which runs down the west of the country.
An independent expedition to the Andes and Amazon in Peru will provide the you with a very challenging and varied four weeks in a country with a vast and fascinating cultural history. The friendliness of the Andean people, the amazing Inca ruins, mountain scenery and trekking opportunities make it an extremely popular destination!

Acclimatisation
For the Acclimatisation Phase teams will either be based in Arequipa where they could acclimatise by trekking to the base camp of El Misti Volcano or Cusco where there are many different options, including treks to the ruins and markets of the Sacred Valley.
The Andes
There are a variety of trekking opportunities in the Andes Mountains around the beautiful colonial town of Cusco. Teams can trek to Machu Picchu, the famous 'Lost City of the Incas', on a beautiful and challenging alternative to the Inca Trail. Even further off the beaten track, there are remote ruins deep in the heart of the Sacred Valley, and mountain treks in the nearby Cordillera Vilcanota. These longer and more adventurous treks allow teams to explore the heart of rural Peru.
The Amazon
For the jungle phase of the expedition, teams are likely to be based near to the town of Puerto Maldonado which is situated in the Amazon Basin on the confluence of the rivers Tambopata and Madre de Dios. To enable teams to get fully involved in local life and experience the unique culture and customs of this area, they will complete a community project in the jungle. Projects can include helping villages construct or renovate community buildings and facilities, painting murals, planting trees or perhaps clearing trails in the jungle.
Rest and Relaxation in Peru
Peru contains numerous opportunities for further exploration or relaxation, from famous historical sites such as Machu Picchu and amazing local markets, to the incredible 'Inca Gold' museum in Lima. Teams could also spend time on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, go White-water Rafting, fly over the famous Nasca lines or visit the Paracas Peninsular and Ballestas islands which are home to an amazing variety of wildlife.
