Acclimatisation in Costa Rica
The Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve protects a beautiful and pristine tract of virgin cloudforest, home to red frogs, sapphire quetzals, orchids, bromeliads, hummingbirds, and thousands of other species of plants and animals. Trekking here offers a great opportunity for wildlife spotting. There are lots of day treks through the cloudforest, or you may like to complete a short 2 day trek with full packs. There are some excellent routes into the cloudforest. You camp in remote huts and then trek out the next day.
Main trekking phase in Costa Rica
A new trek for 2008, Cerro Ena proved a great success. Highlights for one team included catching their own trout at La Truchera (a trout farm), seeing both the Caribbean and Pacific Seas from the summit, the helpful, knowledgeable guides and the fact they didn't see another soul throughout the trek.
The Costa Rica project phase
Teams carry out project work in rural communities in either Costa Rica or Nicaragua. Project work usually entails some maintenance work in schools, painting murals, fixing the buildings or general odd jobs with plenty of opportunity for interaction with local villagers and children. Teams may also have the chance to help out with turtle conservation work at the Pacuare Turtle Reserve on the Caribbean coast. Work here involves helping the volunteers with night patrols - to ensure the turtles lay their eggs in a safe place. Teams then help count the eggs, measure the turtle and cover the turtle's tracks to stop poachers stealing the eggs.
Rest and relaxation in Costa Rica
From white water rafting to zip wiring, to relaxing in hot springs or enjoying the miles of Pacific and Caribbean coastline, Costa Rica really does have something for everyone!
