British Council conference

World Challenge exhibit at the British Council conference in London

On Wednesday, 18th November 2010, World Challenge exhibited at the annual British Council conference which took place in Westminster.  Schools and Local Authorities attended which this conference year had the theme “Creating a curriculum for global citizens”.   Attendees had the opportunity to talk to World Challenge staff and find out about the projects our Challengers can take part in during their expedition.

World Challenge has introduced a scheme to invite bids from in-country contacts to submit proposals for sustainable projects which would be eligible for extra funding. These projects are primarily proposals which can be completed by the host community bringing benefits which will be long lasting. An added bonus is that World Challenge teams can visit and contribute to the project work.

Our 2009 bids led to the funding of 4 further projects.

School renovation – Ecuador

The community of Cando is located on the edge of the Llanganates National Park and is made up of about 20 families. It does not have a focal point except for the school that is in danger of having to close.

The proposal was for much needed maintenance to school facilities such as the kitchen and the roof to enable the school to remain open.

Oasis Management – Hassi Labier, Morocco

Hassi Labier was developed due to its proximity to the oasis, however high levels of emigration in the village have decreased the working age population which in turn has meant that the remaining residents are having trouble maintaining the Oasis.  The proposal was for teams visiting the village to help to clear the Oasis area and educate local students on the importance and methods of Oasis Management.

Reforestation – Tanzania

A proposal was put forward to help with the reforestation of a natural spring, which is important for continuing water supplies to surrounding areas.

The aim was that several teams visited the area and helped to plant trees. The remaining trees would then be planted by local students.

Installation of water tank – Lagunas Peru
Lagunas is a remote community located in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the second largest natural protected area within Peru and the largest protected wetland with the country. The district is extremely poor and receives little support from the government, regional public organisations or charities.
