ASDAN
Eighteen months ago I put my name down to join a World Challenge expedition to Ecuador in Summer 2009, and what followed were some of the busiest yet most accomplishing months of my life, ending in a four week expedition that was easily the best four weeks of my life.

I decided to complete the ASDAN cope level 3 Award which immediately set me up with plans, aims and deadlines which really helped me to organise the various stages of World Challenge.

ASDAN reports First of all was the module: “business enterprise” which related easily to the fundraising aspects of going on expedition – the problem being raising £3500.

By completing the ASDAN Award as I went along, I was able to record down any ideas we had both as a team and individually, which was extremely useful to look over when we wanted to plan the next big fundraiser.

I also recorded any plans and arrangements we made prior to events which we often found made them much more organised. Finally, each event was evaluated thoroughly; therefore we were able to see what went well and what didn’t work as well so that we could improve any future events.

ASDAN reports The second module I picked was: “skill development” and for this one I chose ‘camp craft’- as I knew it would be a valuable skill on expedition in Ecuador.

This was certainly the case; I quickly found that tasks such as cooking using a trangia and putting up tents was much easier for the research and practice I had undertaken in the months prior to setting off.

The third and final module I picked was: “international travel and research,” which assessed the skill of working with others, something that appears in all aspects of World Challenge and that I found was a skill that both I and the rest of my team developed very quickly through arranging fundraisers and even more so on expedition.

ASDAN reports The task I decided to concentrate on for ASDAN was the presentation we devised for the ‘meet the leader’ evening, as we had to divide up the research of the country and then finally collate it all together and present it.

However, the expedition itself built on our team work even more and we have continued to meet up after the expedition.

Overall, the experience has been life changing and I have no regrets on agreeing to take part. I have kept my ASDAN portfolio as it provides me with lots of good memories that I will never forget!
