The Challenger Trust

The Challenger Trust, set up in 1998, is a registered charity which works with disadvantaged young people, giving them the opportunity to develop life skills and improve their academic and employment prospects, through challenging personal development programmes in the outdoors.

Our outdoor education programmes give young people the skills they need to become active and responsible members of their community, at school and beyond. The courses focus on engagement with education and employment skills and have consistently been proved to:
  • Help young people to realise their potential: developing self-esteem, self-confidence and raising aspirations. Key to the courses is adopting an "I can" attitude.
  • Develop the life-skills that young people will need to be successful in the world of work - teamwork, leadership, problem solving, communication and decision making.

We also offer Bursaries to young people who have signed up for an overseas expedition (with any approved expedition provider focussing on personal development) and have subsequently fallen on hard times, putting their participation at risk.

ASCL logo

Association of School & College Leaders (ASCL)

World Challenge has a strong relationship with ASCL and we are the premier partner for our sector. We aim to offer a range of progressive development and skills-based training expeditions that meet the educational needs of member schools, colleges and today's students, whilst also meeting national educational policy guidelines and standards in terms of safety and compliance. Together we host an annual school and college trip safety conference and have organised bespoke ASCL expeditions to Namibia, Sri Lanka and currently Ghana.

HTI - Heads, Teachers and Industry

After reading the inspirational issues paper ‘Cotton wool kids’, launched by Hti, World Challenge developed a partnership with the charity. World Challenge and Hti (Heads, teachers and industry) share values in developing a positive attitude towards risk in schools. World Challenge supports their Go4it campaign which aims to improve innovation, enterprise and employability in schools. For many taking part in an expedition with World Challenge has contributed to their school achieving Go4it status.

Whole Education

World Challenge thoroughly supports Whole Education. For the first time, leading non-political organisations are coming together to share and promote a set of common beliefs that aim to make sure every child reaches their full potential, and has access to an education that fully equips them to be happy and successful in life and work. They want all young people to learn practical skills such as communication and teamwork, to develop qualities such as resilience and empathy and to acquire knowledge that goes beyond literacy and numeracy to an understanding of our culture. To find out more visit Whole Education website.

World Challenge thoroughly supports Whole Education. Our programmes excite and engage, stretch and challenge, provide new skills and open doors for the future. It is not just an amazing trip to another country but a whole developmental journey that starts long before students step on a plane. World Challenge was advocating life skill development long before ‘Every Child Matters’ and ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’. Communication, teamwork, leadership, risk management, negotiation, delegation and money management are all central to the World Challenge programme and participants also have the opportunity to earn 70 UCAS points through our partnership with ASDAN.

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

We offer young people the opportunity to count their expedition experience towards the appropriate section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at the relevant level.

Each World Challenge expedition is unique and, as circumstances vary, much depends on meeting the necessary criteria laid down by the Award. Details can be supplied to each Challenger and information on how they can use their expedition as part of an Award is readily available for school staff.

As a Commercial Access Organisation, in the right circumstances we can issue an Access Credit which entitles a young person to register locally with the Award within six months of the expedition and have that experience signed in their record book as complete.

In addition, from time to time, we offer open expedition opportunities in the UK for those unable to organise their own group for assessment and our training programme has been extended to provide adult Leaders with the opportunity to become an accredited assessor for the Expedition Section for the Awards. Details of these opportunities are available from us on request.

For more information visit our Duke of Edinburgh Award section.

President's Award

The President’s Award is Ireland’s National Challenge Award, the country’s most prestigious and respected individual award programme, and a challenge from the President of Ireland, to young people between 15 and 25 years of age.

Interested? Think you’re made of the right stuff? If you’ve got what it takes to really rise to a personal challenge, then take a look through their website.

The President's Award is a member of the International Award Association of National Challenge Awards Worldwide.
