Expedition preparation conference for School Leaders
Welcome...

Training expeditionBeat the winter blues with some good news from World Challenge. The 2008 expeditions are about to start their final preparations before the big day arrives. We’ve had 233 schools in our Leadership and Development Centre in Buxton to do their training expeditions and 104 are yet to enjoy the experience. All teams learn expedition skills such as camp craft, take onboard important safety information and build a taste for adventure before jetting off to experience the real thing.

2009 teams are just getting to grips with their money management and we’re delighted to announce that Barclays will now be supporting this programme so there’s more help on the horizon!  In this edition you will find money management ideas and more information about the fundraising events.

Adventure Quest

In the UK, we will soon be opening 2 new Adventure Quest sites in Croydon and St Helens.  This will make us more accessible to many more schools and give them the opportunity to enjoy these great fun and fantastic value 1-day adventures. Schools are busy booking UK adventure activities for this summer and we only have limited availability left for activities weeks, so don’t leave it too long!

Also inside you’ll find examples of some of our projects in line with our responsible travel philosophy – we know projects are a really important part of the expedition for you so we’ve invested more time to make them better than ever and genuinely worthwhile too.  You’ll also find some additional services now available to make your expedition a truly unforgettable experience like the expedition book, a new branded clothing site and much more.

We’ve just completed a review of last year and we thought you’d like to see that you are a very important part of a successful and growing organisation.  This is important as it means we can offer you stability and security as well as fund ongoing improvements.  Last year 100% of our profits were reinvested into the company as it is really important to us that as we grow, we improve.

Money management gets boost from Barclays

We’re proud to announce that the World Challenge money management programme is now supported by Barclays. A specialist team from Barclays is currently reviewing the content of the programme and they will launch a new money management section on the expedition members' site very shortly, packed with new hints and tips to make your fundraising a success.

You will also have the option to open a Young Persons Account with Barclays to save for your expedition funds. Each account opened will automatically be entered into a prize draw where you could win your total expedition fee back! “Barclays is proud to support the World Challenge money management programme and provide invaluable assistance to these young adventurers in starting their financial journeys,” says David Jeppesen, Marketing Director, Barclays Bank.

This is just the start of a series of money management developments from this exciting partnership. We really hope it will be useful in making it easier to raise your funds for expedition while also developing and fine tuning skills that will prove valuable in later life and look great on your CV or UCAS form. Keep an eye on the expedition members' site for details.

Reunion expeditions 2008

morocco caveTo celebrate our 21st anniversary we are organising exciting reunion expeditions to Morocco for past Challengers to rekindle all those amazing memories at discounted prices.

Due to the influence of so many cultures over the centuries, Morocco’s architecture is richly diverse. As a modern country it offers a totally unique mix of the ancient and new, together with strong links and influences from both Europe and the Arab world. Visitors cannot fail to leave without having been amazed by the landscapes, enthralled, exasperated and entertained by one facet or another of its culture and people. Morocco provides the perfect blend of excellent trekking with the chance to experience a new culture.

The expedition will be structured like our other morocco campexpeditions for school groups but this will be more challenging to fine tune leadership skills. Each itinerary has been designed like our potential leader developing world training expeditions, with leadership scenarios that you will have never encountered. It will be a chance to relive those memories before too many life commitments are made and will enable Challengers to do all those things that they said they would do differently given the chance to go back on expedition.  It’ll also look great on a CV too!

morocco campPlaces are limited on these heavily discounted expeditions:

Morocco for 8 days departing 18th August or 22nd August. Costs £899 includes UK build-up.

All past Challengers are welcome so spread the word!

To find out more details or to book your place call +44 (0)20 8728 7200 and mention ‘reunion expeditions’.

Christmas card survey results

Thank you all for participating in our worldwide Christmas card survey. We received literally thousands of replies to the survey and many of you kindly sent us a little email back wishing us a Merry Christmas.

As promised, we donated the equivalent of our card production costs (£500) to a charity of your choice. The votes were pretty tight but the winner this year was UNICEF with 30% of the votes. Very close behind were Doctors without Borders (24%) and Feed the Children (18%).

Go4it and World Challenge towards a can do attitude

Go4it logoGo4it has teamed up with World Challenge to help this national award launched for ‘can do’ schools by Heads, Teachers Industry (HTI) to encourage innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in students.

The Go4it award gives recognition to schools that support self belief, free thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude to inspire and challenge learners and improve their life chances. They stimulate a positive attitude towards risk and believe that students should develop a true spirit of adventure for learning.

As you probably noticed, the Go4it values are really close to our own. We firmly believe in the importance of outdoor education reaching the right balance between maximum challenge and minimal risk.

This partnership means we will work together to give more students the opportunity of developing their self-esteem, team working attitude and leadership skills. Award winning schools now get 5 World Challenge Adventure Quest places on special Go4it courses.

Why not Go4it yourself, visit the website and see if your school could apply!

Money management

In this section you'll find:

A special little search box

HomePages friends logoHomePages Friends introduced the World Challenge money management programme to a new way to raise funds. We tested it for a few weeks for you and now we would like to introduce it to our money management programme.

HomePages Friends gives you a free of charge Ask internet search box from which your team can generate advertising income. The earnings are split 50:50 between HomePages Friends and your team. This service is 100% branded and promoted under the team's name and the HomePages Friends involvement remains invisible. They do all the techy bits and the support – you promote the service and then you share the revenue 50:50. You use the search box just as normal and get precisely the same results. It works exactly as any of the other search engines you use (Google, Yahoo, etc) but for every search you do a fee goes to your team’s account! Money for nothing!

You can earn as much as you want, it’s as effective as you make it! How much money you receive basically depends upon two key factors: the number of your supporters who search the internet via their service and the number of searches they do. They estimate that the average supporter regularly searching the internet could readily raise for you in excess of £50 per annum. Imagine how big if gets if all the members of your teams use it, and they ask their families and friends to use it, and they ask their friends, and they ask their friends…!

ask search boxWe, at World Challenge, have our own box in our expedition members’ website, our internet site and our staff intranet. All the earning we make goes straight to the Challenger Trust. The Challenger Trust helps disadvantaged young people from around the UK reach their potential, develop life-skills and improve their academic and employment prospects, through challenging personal development programmes in the outdoors.

20 mile sponsored bike ride

sponsored bike ride 1After receiving their World Challenge t-shirts Katherine, Chris, Alix and Clarissa wore them on their 20 mile sponsored bike ride on Sunday, 3rd February 2008. They completed it in 1 hour 42 minutes (deducting pit stop time).

They left the school at 10.07 am and arrived back in Maidesponsored bike ridenhead at 14.23 pm. The first part was the hardest as it was uphill for about 3 miles. But after that little warm up they could go on for the remaining 17 miles.

They were very well organised: they decided in advance that they would have check points where they could meet their parents and get rehydrated. They also calculated the mileage with their parents’ car to make sure they did the full 20 miles.

They raised a total of £180, they’re getting fit for their expedition and they had a lot of fun!

Wolong Panda Research Centre

wolong panda centre 1One of the teams from Lord Williams School did their expedition project in the Wolong Panda Research Centre last summer in China. Not only did they take care of the pandas but they had great team initiative to propose improvements in the centre.

The Panda Research Centre is located in the Sichuan Province of China. It is the largest and best known panda reserve in China and holds approximately 70% of the world’s pandas. Team 2 from Lord Williams School stayed in the centre for a week last summer. They were divided into 5 small working groups, reporting to a panda keeper and responsible for two pandas. The team was given staff overalls and their first assignments were to clean the cages and feed the pandas on a daily basis.

wolong panda centre 3But the team felt they wanted to do more so they found some 'special projects' in the centre. After speaking with the manager they took on two projects. The first was to improve safety. Due to humid climate and the great consumption of bamboo, the pathways were covered in green algae and bamboo waste wich created a real safety hazard. With a fire hose and brooms to the ready, the team all worked together to wash and scrub the area to make it much safer.

wolong panda centreThe second project was also very environmentally friendly. As the Centre has a constant flow of visitors and volunteers bringing contaminating agents on their shoes, staff and visitors were asked to wear disposable plastic shoe covers when in the Centre. To reduce waste impact, the team came with a brilliant solution to have ‘work shoes’ for staff that were only to be used inside the Centre. And make visitors wear the Centre’s Wellington boots during their visits.

The team’s effort and initiative were very much appreciated in the Wolong Centre. Lord Williams School made the most of the project and had a positive impact in the environment. More World Challenge teams will be going to the Wolong Centre during their expedition to keep up with the good work in a responsible way.

Kindergarten project in Chile

kindergarten chile 1Hogar de Cristo, the largest developmental charity in Chile, hosted Tring School Team 1’s project in a kindergarten on the outskirts of Arica in the north of Chile. Cecelia, who ran the kindergarten, had written plans for the improvements she wished the team to make to the outdoor play area.

kindergarten chile 2

“It turned out to be an excellent project” a member of the team said. The group enjoyed the interaction with the children at the kindergarten, which was set up to enable the children who were living in the slums to be cared for so their mothers could work during the day. The aims of the project were achievable both in time, technical skills and budget. The team had plenty of space to work without disrupting the kindergarten.

kindergarten chile 4The following was achieved:

            • A sand pit was built by laying a two brick high circular wall
            • Two flower beds were built using a similar method
            • A path was constructed out of car tyres filled with gravel
            • Two large murals were painted on the walls
            • A rabbit hutch and run was built

On the last day the Challengers organised a party and grand opening for the children at the kindergarten. In return the kindergarten gave them cards and certificates and the children did a little performance. It was very successful and for many of the Challengers it was the highlight of the expedition. The kindergarten was an extremely nice environment to work in and there is plenty of potential for more project work to be carried out there.

Projects this summer

  • Homewood School will be travelling to South Africa this summer. They have managed to raise the impressive amount of £10,000 to spend on their project. With the money they will build a science block for Dimanda School in Libode (near Umtata, where Nelson Mandela grew up).
  • Here’s an article from the KDFO (Khmer Development Freedom Organisation) newsletter about our Australian teams. Williamstown High Team 2 and Kew High Team 1 did a project in Cambodia and the KDFO newsletter thanked them for their hard work.

  • Linton Village College (two teams) will be working on a brand new project in Lesotho (next to South Africa) this summer, with a high profile charity called the Sentebale Trust. The Sentebale trust aim to 'transform the lives of Lesotho's orphans and vulnerable children - the forgotten victims of poverty and of the HIV/aids epidemic ravaging their country. Sentebale targets particular support to the most vulnerable children - the abused, disabled, ill, abandoned and neglected.’ The team will be working in two schools near Mokhotlong, helping to teach the children and to renovate buildings.
  • We’ll also be continuing with a pretty unique new project on the island of Koh Thmei on the South Coast of Cambodia this year. Each day the team travel to the island by longboat and work in a local school before returning to the mainland at nightfall. A team from St Ignatius School, Australia were the first team there before Christmas, and more World Challenge teams will be going there in the future.

World Challenge worldwide
We often get thank you letters from Challengers, parents and teachers and we thought you’d like to see this one from a School Leader of one of out international schools: Inter-Community School Zurich.

ICS ZurichI have now been on two World Challenge expeditions, one to Ecuador and one to India. Both were entirely different trips, not only because of the vast difference in destinations, but because of the students that participated. I have been the School Leader for the past two years and love being a part of the team that enables our students to have such experiences.

From talking to the students before, during, and after the expedition I am always impressed with how much confidence and leadership qualities they acquire throughout the expedition. The learning takes place at different stages for different people. Sometimes a large part of the learning takes place before the expedition, whilst the students are raising the money and learning about the country they are about to visit. Some students learn so much during the expedition, especially when they are the leader and realise that their thoughts and actions count. Many students learn the most when they are back at school and planning the parents’ evening where they present, and reflect on, the experiences they had.

ICS ZurichI have also had students approach me two years after their World Challenge expedition and tell me how the experience has helped them choose a course at University and made them feel more confident about leaving home. I see some students after they have been to university tell me how it helped them with budgeting, and being sensitive to others when living in close proximity!

We are building on our outdoors programme all the time at ICS and the World Challenge expedition is one of the culminating experiences to aim toward. This builds on various kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, cycling and travelling field trips that take place in the younger years. I also run the Sports Leaders Award programme for Grade 11 students and it is often the students that have been on expedition that sign up for this optional course. These are the students that we, as a school, are proud to send out into the world.

The students that come back from expedition are more confident, enthusiastic, passionate and sensitive to others. They have seen parts of a country that they would never have seen travelling with their families. They have made connections with locals who have such a different life and culture to themselves. They have played football and cricket with children who live in remote villages in the mountains and laughed and communicated with them with very basic gestures and words. This close connection with local children and adults invariably touch our students’ hearts and will stay in their memories forever. We are confident that these experiences will help to shape the choices and decisions that they will make in their future lives. As a school we endeavour to give our students as many opportunities and open them up to as many experiences as possible. The World Challenge expedition is a perfect way of reaching out further into the world and allowing more of the world to touch these very fortunate students.
