World Challenge is aware of an earthquake that has hit Ranau in Sabah, just a short distance from the Mount Kinabalu area of Borneo.
The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and occurred at 02:30 local time today (Saturday). There are currently no reports of injury, loss of life or infrastructure damage.
We currently have three teams on the island but they have all been contacted by our Operations Centre and are safe and well and are continuing as planned with their respective revised itineraries following last week’s initial earthquake which also struck the Mount Kinabalu area.
The schools and parents of the students in-country have also been informed and will be updated as necessary.
We are continuing to monitor the situation but there remain no plans to divert teams away from Borneo. We utilise a number of government and security agencies as well as our own knowledgeable in-country agent network to keep us abreast of developments.
World Challenge’s highest priority is the safety of our participants. Over the last 27 years we’ve worked hard to develop an excellent reputation for our approach to safety and how we operate in over 40 destinations around the world.
