Expedition phases

Your students choose activities from any of the following phases:

Project

Gabugoto

Based up in Mount Elgon National Park, World Challenge has been working with this project site for the past five years. Two teams visited in 2015 and helped to complete the new classroom block.

Trekking

Mount Elgon

6 - 8 days

Straddling the border of Kenya and Uganda, Mount Elgon provides the perfect opportunity for teams to experience altitude. Standing at 4,321m, Mount Elgon will be a real test of your team's stamina to achieve the main goal of reaching the summit.

6 - 8 days

In 2015, we sent

2 teams

to work on a project site, where they completed a new classroom block, taught English and played sport with the pupils.

Projects in Uganda

Ugandan projects are based primarily around schools. World Challenge has always formed lasting relationships with various communities across the country, to ensure the work we are doing benefits the community and the World Challenge team.

In-Country Agent

A native Ugandan, Innocent (Inno) Manda runs Pearl Afrique, his own safari company based in Kampala. He has lots of experience working with NGOs in Uganda and knows his stuff when it comes to trekking, having recently completed Kilimanjaro!

Inno loves football and speaks many of Uganda’s dialects, as well as the umbrella languages of Lugandan and Kiswahili (his English is also exceptional!).

Factfile

Languages spoken: English, Lugandan, Swahili

Time zone: GMT +3

Interesting fact: Pan-fried grasshoppers are a favourite treat in Uganda.

Acclimatisation

The Elgon Community Trail

3 days

The Elgon Community trail is perfect for allowing teams to experience the culture and landscape of Uganda. The trek winds its way through the foothills of Mount Elgon National Park, passing local communities and impressive natural features.

3 days

Rest & Relaxation in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Get down to the west of the country and immerse yourself in the wilder side of things. Queen Elizabeth National Park, with its wide variety of animals and plants, is the perfect place to spend some time and where you can see tree-climbing lions.

Uganda & Western Kenya

Uganda offers a wide range of itinerary options including:

  • Project Uganda – a project-focused expedition

  • Uganda (Mount Elgon) climbing to one of the highest peaks in East Africa

  • Uganda & Western Kenya taking in two of East Africa's most diverse and vibrant countries

Project

Mbigi Primary School

Through our In-Country Agent, Mbigi Primary School is another long-standing project that World Challenge has been involved with. Working with the local community, teams have built a new set of classrooms for the school.

Rest & Relaxation

White water rafting on the Nile

This is the pinnacle of white water rafting. The Nile River at Jinja is famous as one of the best places to pit yourself against mother nature. If you're up for an adrenaline-packed day, look no further!

Uganda is a land in much contrast to other East African destinations such as Tanzania and Kenya. Rather than vast, open plains of savannah grass, Uganda has dense forests and towering escarpments and mountains, filled with a wide variety of fauna and flora.
